Nolan N90 helmet, as N103 alternative

I will inevitably compare the N90 helmet to Nolan's other modular helmet, N103, it being my first choice, and also popular enough so that readers probably had a chance to see one and have a base for comparison, and my open-face HJC IS-33.Choosing a helmet took me several weeks, and multiple trips to several local stores which carried different brands. My old helmet was a open-face HJC IS-33, with internal sun visor. My head shape is slightly narrow and the rather round IS-33 was a bad fit. After trying on probably 50 different Scorpion, HJC, Shark, Arai, Shoei and a few other brand helmets, I narrowed (pun intended) my choices down to Arai Profile and Nolan N103 (N90 was not available at the time). After ordering a N103 from Extreme Supply and waiting for 10 days for them to ship the helmet, I finally gave up and canceled the order. By that time, N90 was just being shipped to USA. I was not able to find any information on N90 other than Web Bike World's review (a very nice review BTW, but the editors couldn't remember how N90 compared to N103 in terms of shape and fit), so I gave Nolan USA a call and asked them. According to the Nolan rep, the internal shape and fit of N90 is identical to that of N103, and now after receiving the helmet, I will agree with that. So here are my observations:- The paint and finish is excellent. Mine is platinum silver color, and the high quality is apparent. The fit is slightly narrow, which fits me perfectly; not as narrow as Arai Profile, but definitely narrower than any HJC I tried. BTW Web Bike World's review calls it slight round, but I will disagree with that.- The visor is excellent. First time I put the helmet, I thought I forgot to close it down, the view is that clear and undistorted. The visor fogs quickly, however. N90 comes with a anti-fog insert which mounts on the visor. I installed mine, and it resolved the fogging issues. With it, the view is ever so slightly changed; just enough to remind you it is there. And because it does not cover the entire visor, with my peripheral vision I can see the uncovered portion of the visor which gets fogged. These issues, however, are minor, and I am getting used to it. The visor can open up slightly for defogging, and I found the opening to be just right for me. The internal dark visor is very nice, and does not get in the way. It does not touch my nose, and does not bother my peripheral vision. With the three visors (clear, anti-fogging, and dark) all put on, the view gets a bit distorted, not by much, just a bit, like wearing slightly dirty sunglasses.- The liner is slightly different, but of equally high quality of the N103. The ear pockets are not recessed as on the N103, but I find them comfortable, and I have rather big ears. I installed little speakers inside, and it did not change the fit too much; I still wear the helmet without being bothered by my ears being pressed too hard.- The chin strap with its ratcheting mechanism is excellent. I adjusted mine before wearing it for the first time, and now I simply put it and tighten it, with my gloves on.- Getting in and out of the helmet is easy. The chin guard clicks in up position, and on the side, there is a little lever which can be used to lock it so that it does not snap down if you hit a bump. I wouldn't wear it open, though, because it feels unbalanced when opened up.- The helmet is noisy. It is as noisy as my open face HJC IS-33. I hear the wind at speeds as low as 25 mph, and at 40 it is already loud. With ear plugs, it is much better. The character of the noise is different from that of my IS-33, however. With IS-33, it is more of a booming, while with the N90 it is more of a whistling, loud hissing sound. I tried different riding positions and angles, it didn't bring any improvement. When I cover the side, where the visor latches are, with my hand, the noise goes down; I might consider applying some clear silicone around that area to seal it better. I ride Kawasaki Ninja 500 with Powerbronze touring windshield, your ride may have a different noise profile. I found that on my scooter which didn't have a windshield, I didn't have any noise issues at 45 mph with the HJC; on the Ninja, the HJC was unbearably loud at 45 mph. With earplugs, the Nolan N90 is quieter than the HJC IS-33 with the same plugs. N90 also has very good aerodynamics, so I don't feel a lot of drag, and can ride comfortably at high speeds. When turning my head to check for cars approaching me from behind, with the IS-33 the drag increases so drastically that I have to be careful not to have my head blown away; it is not the case with the Nolan. At 80 mph, it felt very comfortable and the drag increases just slightly when turning my head for a check.Overall, I am happy with my choice. If it wasn't for the noise, it would have been all I could wish for; as it is, it requires ear plugs and with them, it is great.Regarding the transaction: I purchased my N90 from Powersport Superstore, and couldn't be happier with their promptness and packaging. Their price of N90 is lower than N90S, which does not include the bag and the anti-fog insert; I don't know if this is a mistake, but it worked for me.

Great helmet!

The finish of the helmet is great! The Lava Gray is a little bit shiny and I was looking for some flat black color or something similar but I like it a lot! Comes with the anti-fog and a bag for the Nolan. This is my second Nolan and I'm happy with the results. Saturday or sunday I'll go on the road to see how it works.

Good helmet

The helmet fits my head very tightly (and I got the 2XL), but is comfortable. It breathes very well and does not make a sweaty mess of my head even in Austin's 100F+ summers. It does have more wind noise than my HJC, but it's worth it for the better ventilation. The buttons for opening the front of the helmet allow one to open it without shifting it on the head.
