I installed this unit on my 27ft. pontoon boat, placing the transducer at the bottom of the right rear pontoon log.Pros:Instal of the display was fairly easy though tough to reach and splice wires in the cramped space I had to work with. I used a crimp-on "vampire" tap for the red wire and was able to get the black wire to the bus.Seems to read pretty accurately.Display is backlit so you can see it in the dark.Cons:Length of transucer cable just barely allowed me to get the cable run to my console at a little past mid ship.Unit does not seem to want to display at speeds over 30mph or so. Starts flashing and locks at one depth until you slow down. This may be due to placement of the transducer vs. water turbulence at the rear of the boat I'm not sure.Difficult to read the lcd display from different angles, you have to pretty much be right in front of it. This isnt a huge deal but still worth mentioning.Summary:Overall, this is a very good, basic depth sounder. I am happy with it so far.

I installed a Humminbird 650 depth finder in my 26' 1991 Four Winns Sundowner last year. I was nervous about epoxying the transducer in the hull, as I didnt expect it to be accurate. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it worked faster, better, and read shallower depths than the original depth finder the boat came with that had a thru-hull transducer!! It was a very easy install, to boot. Make sure you use slow-cure epoxy (30 minutes or more preferred). Also if you are buying this depth finder because you plan on installing the transducer in the bilge with epoxy, check with your manufacturer to see if you have balsa coring, or any coring in your hull. For the record, Four Winns does NOT use coring - its solid fiberglass but other manufacturers construct their hulls differently and this may affect the performance of your depth finder if you install the transducer in the bilge. The transducer has difficulty shooting through voids in the hull and as long as its solid fiberglass, you will get the best results.I also recently installed the same depth gauge in my new boat, a 27' 1997 Four Winns Vista. I was concerned that because the boat was newer and larger, it might have a thicker hull and the transducer would have problems shooting through. Well, again I was pleasantly surprised that it works GREAT! I used the same epoxy I used last fall on my old boat. The depth finder comes with the transducer that you can transom mount or glue it in the hull and three different colored face rings, if you are installing the gauge outside the dash panel. You also get a white and black peel and stick face for the gauge, so it will match the rest of your existing gauges. The transducer has at least 20' of wiring, which was more than enough (I had at least 6' extra at the helm) for me.I put a piece of electrical tape over the depth alarm as it is ridiculously loud (this is a GOOD thing to most people) however, even with a piece of electrical tape over the buzzer, you can still hear it loud and clear.I highly recommend the Humminbird 650. As long as you install it properly, you WONT be disappointed!
