Saw this on the Dr. Oz TV show. Normally I use a basket to steam veggies in a copper bottomed pot on the stove. On this product, the bottom only allows microwaves in. The big and small baskets and the top don't. Both baskets have holes in them. You put water in the bottom up to a line then pile the one and/or two baskets on top and add the lid. The microwaves heat the water on the bottom and the steam cooks the items in the baskets.Very easy to clean. Can rinse out or put in dishwasher. It is expensive but looks like it will last quite awhile.Food can be quite hot so it is recommended you leave in microwave for @5 minutes to let it continue cooking and cool down. Otherwise when you remove the top, a lot of really hot steam is emitted. It comes with a chart showing best times per food item. Longest time on a single fill up of water is 25 minutes but most anything will be cooked between 10 and 17 minutes.Nice touch is that underneath the lid is embeded the reminder to fill up to water mark on bottom, don't go longer than 25 minutes, don't go higher than 1200 watts.

I saw this on Dr. Oz's favorite things show. He said it cooked by heating the water, which steams the food, that the food itself is not hit with the microwave waves. That sounded good, because microwaves boil food from the inside out and depend on moisture content to cook. Thus, it can leave food dried out and rubbery. When it first arrived, I noticed it was quite heavy and there were a few parts to it. I thought I may not keep it, as I like simple things. But, after trying it, I'm sold! I cooked some cauliflower, which I never eat, because I don't have a steamer. it turned out perfect! I put it in 7 minutes. You can experiment with the time. I'm going to be buying a lot of cabbage, beets, broccoli, etc..., all the things I'd given up eating due to not having an easy, quick method of cooking them.I've not had a steamer for a couple years now. I've tried a silicone one, but they are messy, take a lot of time, and are hard to find pans to fit them on. There are the kind you set inside the pan, but I'm not convinced that is healthy. I used to have a bamboo steamer, but eventually it fell apart, as I'm sure they all do. I never liked it much because there wasn't much room in it and because the food always had a funny taste. If you've ever looked at water after bamboo steaming, you will notice it's brown. And, when you steam with bamboo, it smells strange.I give kudos to Tupperware for inventing this, it truly lives up to it's "Smart Steamer" name.Note: Be extra careful with this when taking it in and out of the microwave or moving it around, because it is awkward to handle and one side can easily tip. So, grab both sides and make sure it's balanced well in your grip. I've almost dropped it a few times before remembering this.

This is the ONLY ACTUAL, REAL microwave steamer on the market, because the microwave rays do not bombard the food itself, only the water in the tray below. My research, which I have only now discovered, after using microwaves for over 30 years, is that microwaves destroy nutrients, alter molecules, and damage the food in general, and THIS unit eliminates all that! Only the water gets heated, because the bowl has a steel core covered in plastic which the rays cannot penetrate, and the rays are diverted downward to the water tray below. The water actually boils, and I have had beautiful results with broccoli crowns, for example. It takes 10 minutes and then 10 minutes standing time on the counter with the cover still on, of course, and with perfect results, as if you had used a good electric steamer. Times would be less with a 1,200 watt microwave, which is the maximum allowed. My microwave is 950 watts. It cannot be used longer than 25 minutes without letting it cool first before continuing to cook beyond 25 minutes. Of course, the water level must be maintained. However, 25 minutes is long enough for almost any food, especially vegetables. I have not used the tray which allows 2-tier steaming, and then you can cook 2 different foods separately at the same time. Nothing could be easier and the cleanup simply involves running hot water over the various pieces. I dry the big bowl with a towel. This is a revolutionary product that I cannot praise enough, as I now have perfectly steamed food not damaged by microwaves. You will absolutely love this! The unit is a bit heavy, because it is very high quality, backed with a lifetime guarantee. Tupperware charges almost twice as much as this Amazon price, and even then it would be worth it! Thank you, Amazon and Tupperware, for this amazing product!
