Driveway Monitor That Works!

We needed a driveway alert for the house to advise us of visitors. Tried the "motion detector" type using passive infrared technology, only to have wandering night time animals, wind, leaves, etc., constantly set it off. The STI sensor is a "magnetic field disturbance" type of device. A car, motorcycle, bicycle, or something with a sufficient metal mass is needed to signal an alert. (I did drive my wife nuts one day using a wheelbarrow by it). It took me several attempts to get the sensor in the perfect place. I suggest you don't install a permanent post until you find that spot. If you follow the directions to a "T" you may get it right the first time... i.e. a vehicle should not pass between the sensor & receiver location(s). (Yes you can have several receivers). I like the option of manual and/or automatic reset, visual as well as audible alerts of the receiver. There is silence mode for the times you don't want it to sound an audible alert.The receiver instructions are at times confusing when programing units to communicate with each other... not difficult, but again they must be followed exactly or you'll get frustrated. Overall I am very pleased with the unit and its operation. I gave it 4 stars not 5 because of the instructions, which could be written more clearly for us less "techie" people and the battery only operation of the sensor. It would be nice to have the option of a weatherproof transformer to plug the sensor into an outdoor outlet.Not perfect, but a whole lot better than an air hose across the driveway, or placing a signal wire underground and definitely an option to those "motion detector" types that give a lot of false signals. A good buy for the money!

Performs flawlessly.

We live in the north and I was concered about the performance of this product in the snow. No problems so far. I had talked to the company before purchasing and they said that one of theirs had been plowed under all winter and still worked. We have not tested those conditions this year. I do not want to be without this product. I am very rural and it's great to know when someone is coming down your drive...be it UPS or friends. We just hammered the plastic post in the ground before the ground froze and followed simple instructions. We have frequent power outages, but this always comes back on with no problems...one thing I don't have to reset! Love my STI driveway monitor!

Magnetic sensors are heads above motion detectors for where we live. A motion sensor went go off in the middle of the night with every deer or dog that came down the drive. These only detect metal objects like cars.I had an old Designtech magnetic sensor very similar to this one that finally gave up the ghost after 7 years, and discovered that they no longer made a magnetic sensor, only a motion detector. I looked around and found this unit which functions very well, but just like the old Designtech unit, the reliable range is about half the advertized maximum. Unlike the old Designtech unit, the BRIGHT red LED on the indoor alarm that tells you the alarm has sounded does not go out after a few minutes. It just keeps blinking incessantly until you reset it. It's a total annoyance to have to reset the light every time a car comes down the drive. That's the only reason I didn't give this five stars.
